Here we publish our most commonly asked questions, but please contact us with any you may have that are not covered here.

  • How do I join?

    You can register online here or call us on 0845 805 0501. We will be happy to answer any questions you have and talk you through the registration process. You can also email us on sales@principalcontractors.com for further information. Once you have completed our application form and return to us with your personal identification and address documentation you can join us on the same day.

  • What ID do you require?

    We require a clear copy of your Passport, or both parts of your driving licence for ID purposes and a recent utility bill (in certain circumstances additional information may be required).

  • Are there any joining fees or exit penalties?

    There are no joining fees, exit penalties or minimum contract duration.

  • How long will it take me to be paid?

    Once funds have been received and deductions taken we pay you direct into your personal bank account on the same day we received funds from your agency or client, if your bank operates the faster payments system.

  • What Insurances do you provide?

    All necessary insurances including Professional Indemnity up to £5m. (Exclusions apply)

  • What is my relationship with Principal Contractors?

    Principal Contractors subcontracts your services to the agency or end client. You are contracted to Principal Contractors as a self-employed consultant. You will not be a director or an employee of the company. You will not be running your own limited company, and will not incur any of the costs or administrative burdens of doing so.

  • What happens if I source work through more than one Recruitment Company or client?

    Flexibility is one of the key elements of your self-employment, so there are no restrictions on how many recruitment companies or end clients that engage your services. You can email the details of any recruitment company or client to info@principalcontractors.com and we will ensure we make contact with them and put all the necessary paperwork in place for you, well in time for you to commence contracting. Just be sure that when you are notifying us of your hours and charge out rates that you are clear which company we are to invoice.

  • Can I raise invoices myself using Principal Contractors' details?

    No. Send us your charge out details and we will invoice as required and upon receipt of cleared funds, will arrange for the payment to be made directly into your personal bank account.

  • Can I set my own charge out rate?

    You will negotiate your charge out rate with the client or recruitment company. You must inform us at the start of the contract the rate that has been agreed, and if this changes at any point during the contract.

  • How do I let you know what hours I've worked?

    You can email your hours to info@principalcontractors.com or fax a copy of your timesheet to 0845 805 0503.

  • How will I know I have been paid?

    You will receive a remittance advice and you can be informed via a free text to your mobile.

  • Is Principal Contractors an Umbrella Company?

    No. Umbrella Companies take advantage of temporary workplace expenses rules to allow their employees to make a slightly higher return than they would as an employee of their agency or client. An umbrella company is restrictive to you in both the type of expenses you can claim, the duration of the contract that you can take on, and the fact that you must become the umbrella company's employee. They are also costly to your agency or client, who have to pass on the cost of Employer's National Insurance to the umbrella company.

  • How can I get up to date information?

    Your support colleagues are available between 9am and 5.30pm GMT Monday to Friday to assist with any queries.

  • How do I change my bank, personal or contract details?

    You should contact us by telephone or by emailing info@principalcontractors.com. We can make payments in any major currency and have an international bank account to do so.

  • What do you charge?

    Rather than have a service where we expect one size to fit all, we will provide a solution that is tailored to your individual circumstances. The margin applied for undertaking administration is dependant on the solution that works for you.
